Wei Luo
Born in Shenzhen, China, Wei Luo showed great interest in music and began piano lessons at age five. Wei gave her debut recital in Hong Kong at age six. She entered the Shenzhen Arts School at age nine, and was accepted with the highest score to the primary school affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music under the mentorship of Zhe Tang at age ten. Two years later, she entered the middle school of Shanghai Conservatory of Music with the highest score. Winner of numerous competitions in China, Wei claimed first prize in the 11th Chopin International Competition for Young Pianists in Poland and the 2nd Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Frankfurt, both in 2010. Shanghai Wen Hui Bao described “Wei has claimed first prizes of two international piano competitions on different themes in one month”. She was also awarded the prize of “Prominent Talent” by Shanghai municipal government in the same year. Wei made her orchestra debut at age 11 with the Shanghai Philharmonic where, along with artistic director Muhai Tang, they opened the orchestra’s European tour by performing Prokofiev Concerto No. 3 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center. At age thirteen, Wei was accepted to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music where she studies with Gary Graffman and Robert McDonald, as the first student who receives guidance from two professors.
Wei was the winner and recipient of the “Salon de Virtuosi” Career Grant in New York at age 16. She received the Gilmore Young Artist Award at age 17 and signed with the Universal. She was recognized by American classical radio station WQXR as one of the 19 artists to watch in 2019. In August 2019, Wei released her self-titled debut album produced by Grammy awards producer Erica Brenner, under Decca Gold, Universal Music Group. The album was recommended and featured by the “Gramophone” online as one of the most exciting new releases in July, 2019. Soon after the release on various online platforms, it was featured as front page on both Apple Music and Amazon Music (classical).
These years, Wei has made appearances across Europe and the Americas. She has performed Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 with San Diego Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Jahja Ling, Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3 with Minnesota Orchestra, Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 2 with Indiana Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with Grammy-winning conductor David Alan Miller, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra with Michael Stern, Denver Philharmonic, Denver Young Artists Orchestra, Michigan Symphony, Kunming Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few.
Wei has made her solo recital debuts and performances in such venues and music festivals as Lincoln Center David Geffen Hall, Herbst Theater, Steinway Hall, Lucerne Festival, Napa Valley Music Festival, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, and Princeton Festival, NY International Keyboard Festival, Gilmore Keyboard Festival, etc. Her recitals have been featured and broadcasted nationwide, including WXQR Classical Channel, WHYY Pennsylvania, Michigan WCMU, and New Jersey WWFM among others.
Wei has recorded many short pieces for STEINWAY & SONS Spirio piano. Wei is an avid performer of contemporary music. The Poems, a set of short pieces that Wei commissioned, written by American contemporary composer and pianist Marc Neikrug, was premiered at Santa Fe Music Festival in July 2019.
In addition to the collaboration with orchestras, Wei is a chamber music performer. She has performed with British violinist Daniel Hope, French cellist Gary Hoffman, Escher Quartet, to mention but a few. She has also appeared with violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Steven Isserlis at Lincoln Center.
Wei has always enjoyed performing in unconventional venues and doing charity concerts. She played recitals in the City Pavilion during Expo Shanghai 2010. She has also visited and given charity performances in nursing houses, middle schools, hospitals, primary schools, churches, and scientific research institutions, during her concert travels to Indiana, Minnesota, Philadelphia, Denver, and New Jersey.
During the epidemic period in 2020, Wei still insists doing charity concerts, including the piano recital on June 21 at Shenzhen Concert Hall, which was broadcast live via Bilibili to critical acclaim, reaching thousands of viewers.
