Harp: Chen Yuying
Harpist Chen Yuying began to study piano at the early age, then she entered the Primary School affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music to study harp at age of nine. After graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory in 2005, she took further studies and obtained a Master’s degree in Harp Performance in 2012. She had studied under the tutelage of Professor Zhang Liduo and Zhang Xiaojie, and had been instructed by many world renowned harpists, including Susan Mcdonald, Fotain-binoche, and Maistre Xavier.

Chen Yuying, the Principal Harpist of the Shanghai Philharmonic, was born in Shanghai, China. She started playing piano at the age of three. At the age of nine, she began her studies with Zhang Liduo at the Middle School affiliated to Shanghai Conservatory of Music and later with Professor Zhang Xiaojie (Jason Chang) at Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She also took classes with Will Postma, Isabelle Perrin, Carrol Mclaughlin, Xavier de Maistre, Jana Bouskova, Helga Stork and Elisabeth Fontan-Binoche during her study at Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

In 2005, she was featured on the “Focus on Youth” program at World Harp Congress in Dublin. YuYing was the winner of the “Concours International de Harpe 2006” – an international harp competition hosted at the Ville de Lille in France.

Chen Yuying was already a world-class harpist before winning the 19th International Harp Contest in Israel. She landed the principal harp position with the Shanghai Symphony eight years ago, just after graduating from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. She also has taken the top prizes at competitions around the world, including the 2006 Concours International de Harpe in Lille, France, and the 2009 International Harp Competition “Golden Harp” in St. Petersburg, Russia. Despite all of her success and accolades, winning in Israel is a crowning achievement for YuYing, as it is for any harpist.

The Bay Area and Silicon Valley Chapters of the American Harp Society are pleased to present award-winning harpist Chen Yuying for a Harp Master Class on Wednesday, June 15, 2016. Harp students of all ages and levels were encouraged to perform a piece they were preparing and received guidance and feedback from this world class musician.

Chen Yuying is first prize winner of the 19th Israel International Harp Contest (2015), the most prestigious harp competition in the world, as well as the winner of its French Music Category. She also won the Lille Harp Competition in Lille France, the Golden Harp International Harp Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
