Dizi, Xiao and Xun: Zhang Weiliang
Well known as “The Master of Dizi and Xiao”, Zhang Weiliang is not only the leading ambassador of Chinese traditional music but also one of the symbolic artists in both traditionally and contemporarily area. He has carved out a career as a soloist, educator, and composer since he started his career half a century ago. Zhang Weiliang is now recognized as an outstanding exponent of the traditional repertoire as well as a leading interpreter of contemporary Dizi, Xiao and Xun music by today’s most prominent composers. His artistic achievements made him one of the most prestigious representatives among Chinese traditional musicians and the symbol of Chinese music.
 
In 1986, Zhang Weiliang recorded “The World of Xiao”, the very first CD of China, afterwards, he has recorded nearly 30 albums under the China Record Corporation, People's Music Publishing House, Hugo Record, Dragon Voice Record, Wind Music, etc. He also worked with many internationally renowned directors and played in their award-winning films such as Zhang Yimou’s Ju Dou, Raise the Red Lantern, Chen Kaige’s Farewell My Concubine. In 2005, Zhang Weiliang composed all the musical works for the China Pavilion at the Aichi World Expo, then, at the at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he also served as the composer, orchestrator, Dizi and Xiao performer for the large-scale group performance called "Nature".
 
Born in Suzhou, Zhang Weiliang started his study at the age of 8. He entered the Central Conservatory of Music in 1977 and studied with Zhao Songting, Feng Zicun, etc. He won the first prize in the National Traditional Instrumental Music Competition. Through his devotion to the composing (more than 150 pieces), performance and research of the music of Dizi, Xiao and Xun, Zhang Weiliang keeps expanding the capabilities of these instruments and makes a great tribute to the traditional music. He is highly praised by the Washington Post, The Independent, La Figaro and People’s Daily.
 
Zhang Weiliang is also an important promoter of the Chinese traditional music on the international stage. He’s the first artist who initiated and practiced the concept of “New Traditional Chinese Music”, advocates the integration of Western musical elements, contemporary composition techniques and traditional music, and dedicates himself to internationalizing the traditional music of China. He has premiered a series of the contemporary concertos with Central Philharmonic Orchestra of China conducted by Han Zhongjie. Since then, he has collaborated many times with the GRAME, creating works that combine Dizi and Xiao with electronic music, such as the record “The Heavenly Sound of Xiao” and the music performance in the dance drama Tears of Marco Polo.
 
By founding Huanxia Chamber Orchestra, Huaxia Traditional Orchestra and China Bamboo Flute Ensemble, and collaborating with several internationally renowned composers and performers to create a series of innovative works, such as Guo Wenjing’s “The Words of Bamboo”, Chen Qigang’s “San Xiao”, and Joel Hoffman’s “Reflets sur l’eau”, Zhang Weiliang has successfully made the traditional music worldwide.
 
Zhang Weiliang has performed in China, South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Singapore, and performed in the major concert halls including Musikverein, Barbican Centre, South Bank Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Lucerne Concert Hall, Victoria Concert Hall, National Centre for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Concert Hall, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Xinghai Concert Hall, Shenzhen Concert Hall and Hong Kong Cultural Center. He has collaborated with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Central Philharmonic Orchestra of China (now China National Symphony Orchestra), Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, and has been invited to several international festivals such as Asian Games Art Festival in Hiroshima, French Summer Festival and Musiques en Scene in Lyon. In 2014, he became the first Chinese traditional musician to perform at the No.10 Downing Street at the invitation of former British Prime Minister John Cameron.
 
Zhang Weiliang has taught in the China Conservatory of Music for more than 40 years; he was the Head of the Department of Chinese Instruments there. He’s also holding chairs as guest professor in various conservatoires among China.
 
In 2021, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his music career, Zhang Weiliang went on a tour in China, holding eight recitals with the theme of "Dreamland". During the tour, he performed in many famous theaters in China, including the National Center for the Performing Arts, Jiangsu Center for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Concert Hall, Harbin Grand Theatre, Chengdu City Concert Hall. Such a rare project of Chinese traditional music recitals has represented the essence of Zhang Weiliang's art in a half century, and has been well received by audiences around the country. As the music critic Xiu Hailin wrote, “For each concert, Zhang Weiliang would come up with new expressions and highlights, which reflect his unique pursuit as well as his exploration and expression between tradition and modernity, China and the world.”
 

Guqin: Cheng Hongyu
Cheng Hongyu is a Guqin master resident in Germany and a distinguished professor at the School of Music of the Southwest University in China. She graduated from the Nanjing University of the Arts, majoring in Guqin, and studied under her father, Professor Cheng Gongliang, a Guqin master and composer of the Guangling School. Cheng Hongyu started studying Guqin under the guidance of her father at the age of 7. She has inherited Cheng Gongliang's musical philosophy: to integrate the essence of the West into Chinese music and to combine all kinds of beauty around the world.
 
Her studies of western music in Germany have diversified her musical values. In the communication with international musicians, Cheng Hongyu focuses on the exploration and the fusion of music materials from all over the world. She is an inheritor and a creator of Guqin art with a multicultural background. She is also a Chinese and European culture communicator and a music producer for the Paranojazz-Recoad Studio.
 

Piano: Jin Yuejiao
Jin Yuejiao is a faculty member at the School of Music of Minzu University of China. She has a Master's degree in Piano Performance and studied in the USA as a National Foundation recipient.
 
As an active collaborative pianist at home and abroad, Jin Yuejiao is the frequent guest of the “Open the Door of Art” concert series at the Beijing Concert Hall and the Forbidden City Concert Hall. She performed with the famous clarinetist Omar Zoboli at the Central Conservatory of Music Concert Hall. She was invited by Steinway America to play at the “Toast to the Maestro” Concert and performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No.2 with the Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra. She was also invited to participate in the opera project of the world-class soprano Ms. Martina Arroyo in New York as the collaborative piano in La Traviata. She also performed with the China National Opera House singers at the concert “Night of the Opera”. She held recitals with famous artists like the American violinist Charles Wetherbee.
 

Dizi: Li Zhihan
As a young Dizi player and a Xiao player, Li Zhihan is currently a member of the Chinese Bamboo Flute Orchestra and the Bamboo Flute Professional Committee of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society. She studied under Professor Zhang Weiliang, a famous Chinese Dizi and Xiao virtuoso and a PhD supervisor. She plays Dizi with a comprehensive range of techniques and styles, as well as a broad command of traditional music styles. Her musical expression reveals a distinct musical personality, with a strong understanding of musical emotions and an expressive interpretation of contemporary works.
 
She has won four privileged awards in major competitions at home and abroad. She has participated in several CD recordings of contemporary music works and the recordings of CCTV programs, all are well received. She has performed in France, Italy, Japan, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia, Albania, etc., and many famous venues in China, including the National Center for the Performing Arts, Xinghai Concert Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall.
 

Host: Li Chao
Li Chao, a master in the major of Broadcasting and Hosting, is a teacher of the major of Broadcasting and Hosting in the Mass Media College of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, a member of China Television Artists Association, a member of Chinese University Film and Television Society, a Board Director of the Broadcasting and Hosting Professional Committee of Sichuan Higher Education Association. Once he was honored with First Prize in Sichuan Provincial Popular Science Explanation Competition, Second Prize in Sichuan Province’s First Campus Host Competition, six prizes of the title of Excellent Instructor of national competitions, more than twenty prizes of the title of Excellent Instructor of provincial competition.
 
Since 2006, he has hosted more than 400 major concerts and ceremonies, including the Concert of the Original Music Development Alliance of Chinese Higher Art Colleges, Concert of China Chorus Art Festival and so forth, and has planned and directed more than 30 gala activities.
