The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic
The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic have held a prestigious position in the international music scene since their formation in 1972. Originating from a radio recording of Julius Klengel's "Hymnus," their exceptional sound and technical prowess quickly won over concert audiences worldwide. Renowned for their versatility, they perform classical, jazz, tango, and avant-garde music, captivating listeners of all ages with their unique and enchanting sound.
Numerous contemporary composers, including Boris Blacher, Tan Dun, and Arvo Pärt, have written works specifically for them. As cultural ambassadors, they have accompanied the German president on international visits. Their recordings frequently top the charts, earning them the Echo Klassik award in 2001, 2005, and 2017.
The ensemble is unparalleled; no other orchestra possesses such a rich and expansive string chamber group. Since 1972, they have performed globally, with members changing over the years, yet maintaining a legacy of excellence and innovation.
