Program Profile
Overture 2008
Tan Dun has integrated the sounds of 2400 year-old ancient gold bells with the sounds of jade stone chimes he created exclusively for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to compose the Award Ceremonies Music and the Olympic Games Sports Demonstration Music. Ancient bells from the Marquis Yi of Zheng mix with the sounds of jade musical instruments played by the worlds first jade orchestra, in a compositional concept Tan Dun calls Gold Rings Jade Echoes. These harmonious sounds that meld ancient and modern are broadcast at each competition and transmitted on radio and television throughout the world.
Secret Road of Marco Polo (Commissioned by Berlin Philharmonic)
Secret Road of Marco Polo is Tan Duns discovery of all things invisible and states of mind intangible. The composer acts as oracle, observing every single note as a life and a spirit. Each note has a head, body and tail. Each note has a story about where it is from and where it goes. Sometimes the attack of a sound is like an ending, and the decay of a sound is like a new beginning. The movements in the middle of the sound are like calligraphy, a living line with unlimited possibilities, allowing your body and mind to transcend time and space. In Secret Road of Marco Polo, Tan Dun transposes and amplifies these gesturesfrom the single tones of a plucked instrument into a full scale of orchestral coloring. Secret Road of Marco Polo is a soulful search for cultural harmonies and their organic connections, tracing their different forms and directions.
