GRAMMY Award-winning Chanticleer, the classical vocal ensemble based in San Francisco of the United States, has developed a remarkable reputation over its 30-year history for its interpretation of vocal classics, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. With its seamless blend of twelve male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, Chanticleer has earned international renown as an orchestra of voices.
Named for the clear-singing rooster in Geoffrey Chaucers Canterbury Tales, Chanticleer was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis Botto, who sang with the group until 1989 and served as Artistic Director.
Called the world’s reigning male chorus by the New Yorker magazine, and praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity, Chanticleer has won the GRAMMY Award twice including the album Colors of Love, which won the 2000 GRAMMY Award for Best Small Ensemble Performance (with or without Conductor) and the Contemporary A Capella Recording Award for Best Classical Album, as well as its single Lamentations and Praises, which won 2002 GRAMMY Award for the Best Small Ensemble Performance and the Best Classical Contemporary Composition.
Chanticleer has released nearly 30 recordings to its credit ranging from early music to contemporary, spiritual, gospel, jazz, world music and Christmas classics. The ensemble will perform more than 100 concerts in 2008-2009 season including its debut tour to China in May 2009.
