An outstanding tenor of the Song and Dance Troupe of the General Political Department of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army and National First Class Actor, Wang Hongwei earns a lot of reputation for his deep-rooted vocal skills, naturally well-built voice, and precise interpretation of different repertoire. He won various prizes in vocal competitions in China and abroad and is now considered a leading figure on the stage of Chinese folk songs.
Joined the Peoples Liberation Army in 1984,Wang Hongwei graduated from the PLA Academy of Arts and obtained the Masters Degree of Arts majoring in Vocal Performing. He studied the vocal arts under the guidance of Prof. Meng Ling, renowned tenor Chao Haojian, and Prof. Qi Hongen. Through 20 years practice and performance, Wang Hongwei has brought many Chinese folk classics with great popularity to peoples heart. In recognition of his excellent contribution in Chinese folk song, he was awarded a First Class, a Second Class and a Third Class Merit Citation.
In recent years, Wang Hongwei performed a large number of outstanding vocal works such as Singing Loud for West China, Love Song of West China, Paean for West China, and Pamir Antelope with deep emotion. These beautiful melodies accompanied him to the performances in countries and regions such as Japan, Singapore, Italy, Austria, Russia, France, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Sweden, Portugal, Brazil, Korea, Indonesia, as well as Hong Kong and Macau.

In 1993, Wang Hongwei was invited to the Tokyo Arts Festival where he successfully completed his debut album Huanghe Yao Yao in collaboration with China Symphony Orchestra and the renowned Chinese composer Zhao Jiping. The same year, he won the excellent prize of the folk singing category at the 7th China National Youth Vocal Contest. In 2000, he won the Golden Prize at the 9th China National Youth Vocal Contest.
In 2001, Wang Hongwei performed Singing Loud for West China on the stage of CCTV Spring Festival Gala and subsequently released a series of albums entitled Singing Loud for West China, Love Song of West China, and Paean for West China. In 2002, Wang Hongwei was awarded the Best Male Folk Singer of the 1st China Golden Disc Award. In 2003, he won the 4th China Gold Record Award. Hereafter, he won the Best Male Folk Singer Prize at the CCTV-MTV Music Awards. Wang Hongwei has held vocal recitals in cities including Ningbo, Jinan, Guangzhou where he obtained warm applause from the audience.
In December 13, 2008, Wang Hongwei successfully staged a vocal recital featuring Chinese folk songs at the Golden Hall in Vienna Musikverein, and therefore became the first Chinese male folk singer who has performed at the gorgeous Venue. The concert filled with abundant elements of Chinese folk music caught audiences attention and won warm acclaim both in Europe and in China.
