Wang Jian was born in China into a musical family in 1968. He began studying the cello at the age of four with his father, a fine cellist. At the age of nine, he entered the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. The remarkable story of Wang Jian began at the age of ten when the American violinist Isaac Stern discovered him while filming the Academy Award-winning documentary From Mao to Mozart. During the decade that followed, Wang Jian went to the United States and studied at Yale University and also at the Juilliard School.
Wang is famous in China as well as in the West. He made his orchestral debut at the age of eleven, performing the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with the Shanghai Sympho
