In this lecture, internationally acclaimed cellist Trey Lee will share his musical journey—from a deep-rooted classical training in the West to a heartfelt return to his Chinese musical heritage. Drawn back by the song The Sea, My Homeland, he has since re-imagined Chinese music for the cello—from “The Song of the Shepherdess” to his landmark arrangement of Dream of the Red Chamber, a work that opened new dialogues with orchestras worldwide. As a 21st-century musician, Lee remains open to new ideas, using his cello to reshape the sound of our time and build bridges across generations and cultures.
Lee will also perform live selected excerpts from his cello-and-piano arrangement of Dream of the Red Chamber, along with Liping Wang's The Sea, My Homeland and The Song of the Shepherdess, as well as Western classics and contemporary Chinese works arranged for cello—offering the audience an immersive experience of East-West musical encounters.
